why was Ophelia allowed a Christian burial...?
Q. even though she committed suicide?
Asked by annabella - Wed Apr 21 12:12:05 2010 - Theater & Acting - 2 Answers - Comments

A. The two gravediggers debate that question at the start of Act Five, Scene One, and come to the conclusion that Ophelia is getting special treatment because of her family's high status. The priest officiating at her burial (and refusing to perform the more elaborate rites that Laertes tries to insist on) says, "Her death was doubtful." That doesn't mean that she was definitely found to have committed suicide, but that there was some question whether she drowned by accident or killed herself deliberately. The priest says further that it is only because of "great command" (presumably intervention by Claudius) that Ophelia is getting more of a religious burial than she normally would under the circumstances.

A. *blinks* that a rotting body destroys the land around it for hundreds of years. Why would you waste the land that way? Not to mention the complete idiocy of the ceremony itself. Edit: psst... pantheist, actually it does. I have a background in biology. While its decomposing, nothing can grow and the ground cannot be used. At the very least, it takes decades. Contrary to popular opinion, a body does not completely wither away the flesh in only a year without help from intense concentrated heat.

A. As do we all EXCEPT for the Westboro Baptist Church. They are in grave sin daily with their words of hate and lies about God hating soliders and gays and others. God created every person and loves each one unconditionally. Some how these people are getting away with hate in our country and that shouldn't be allowed. Funerals for anyone are for the loved ones on that deceased person, for closure and respect. Our American soliders go through hell and back for this country to keep it great. God bless them!

How did Ancient Romans hold a funeral? What were their burial rites?
Q. How did Ancient Romans(non-christian) hold a funeral? What were their burial rites?
Asked by alex r - Mon Oct 19 17:37:48 2009 - Religion & Spirituality - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Depends on how rich/liked you were. For instance, the emperor augustus had his own mausoleum and crematorium built. Rome was in mourning for ages on his death, and they made him a god. But for the most part, what would happen is the family would systematically close the dead person's eyes while calling out their name. Then they placed a coin in their mouth to pay the ferryman to take them across the river styx to the underworld. Then they were put on display, that's where wealth came in. The more important and liked you were the longer your body was on display. Nobility were sometimes out for a week, commoners for a day. Then there was a procession, with a band behind the casket, followed by mourners and family members carrying wax… [cont.]

In Harry Potter, can a wizard be a Christian?
Q. In the Harry Potter universe, do you think it is possible for a wizard to be a Christian? In the books/movies we see that Ignotus Peverell and Harry's parents are all buried in a churchyard, presumably they would have a Christian burial, but is this the case? Discuss. :P

A. in the books Harry, Ron, Hermione, and many other wizards are christian. most of the children at hogwarts i assume are christian, because they always leave for Christmas break. I believe Harry's parents are christian, because there is a mention of harry receiving a mini broom for Christmas from Sirius.

How would an atheist funeral/burial work?
Q. Now I know nobody cares about what happens after they're dead, but how would an atheist funeral work? What would you do, as an atheist, if your family was mostly Christian and it was assumed that you would have a Christian burial (which I'm sure is the situation for many of you)? Remember, that if you wish to be bured with your Christian/religious spouse or relative in a religious cemetery you would have to have a religious funeral. Since the church owns the grounds, anything they say goes. On that note, would you rather be buried or cremated?

A. Of course it isn't right. But in their uneducated eyes Islam is more important than any other religion. It is necessary to keep the population uneducated to keep them believing this falsehood. Lack of respect among these types of young men is very very common place in Britain...any criticism of their behaviour or attitude is because the critic is racist/ islamaphobe etc etc.

A. I hope I'm understanding you question correctly. If a person is Christian at the time of death and after their burial will they still be Christian? YES absolutely. Our spirits return to the spirit world, not heaven or hell as we have not had judgment day yet. So in the spiritual world we continue to be Christian in helping others, doing good works, obeying the commandments, etc. After the resurrection all will go before Jesus for judgment and be sent to one of three kingdoms in heaven. Very few will be cast out to outer darkness/hell.

A. Let the dead, bury the dead... This should be of no concern ! Instead of spending a lot of money in funeral, distribute it to the homeless, the poor. The flesh, even when you are still in it, profits little...and it sure isn't of any value after the spirit and soul has left. I have a spot here, that will cost less than 200 bucks for an undertaker to come and sign the certificate, witnessing the burial, which will be a hole and lowering me into it, wrapped in a blanket. I have made provisions for a PARTY at my burial, because everyone that know me, KNOWS that I am NOT in the grave, but with my Lord Jesus ! Halleluiah !!! Peace and love...

can someone answer a few questions about Christian Science for me?
Q. I was wondering if someone could explain a bit about Christian Science - I need to know if they have baptise or christen a child at birth. What kind of rites do they use for this, if any? Also, is a Christian Science funeral/burial like other Christian denominations? What would take place during a burial? I know next to nothing about Christian Scientists other than the basic tenets of their beliefs. Thanks in advance! Also, I'm not trying to start an argument of any kind.
Asked by huz - Tue Sep 1 17:13:51 2009 - Religion & Spirituality - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Of all the Christian cults in existence, Christian Science is the most inaccurately named. Christian Science is neither Christian or based on science. Christian Science denies all the core truths of what makes a system Christian. Christian Science is, in fact, opposed to science and points to mystical new-age spirituality as the path for physical and spiritual healing. Christian Science should be recognized and rejected as the anti-Christian cult that it is.

A. 'Why do some Christians reserve burial plots before death? Don't they have faith that they'll never get sick?' There is a very big difference between getting 'sick' and dying, and we will all die at some point, hence the 'reserve burial plots before death.' Simple really.

Now that the US Supreme Court has ruled that crosses aren't a Christian symbol, what symbol will you use?
Q. Apparently the cross isn't a Christian symbol, and Christians are celebrating this decision of the Supreme Court, so what symbol do they plan to use now to signify Christian places and burial grounds?
Asked by M (atheist) - Thu Apr 29 08:32:58 2010 - Religion & Spirituality - 18 Answers - Comments

A. well, I like what one responder on that page said. If it's not a Christian Symbol, then it should be ok to draw a naked woman riding a cross =) What about throwing them down and burning them? Surely the Christians wouldn't get upset, because it's NOT a Christian religious symbol. If they are going to take it that way, then there should be absolutely no problem with Pagans using their symbols anywhere they want and it not be considered the state or federal gov't upholding one religion over another. I say we put Thor's Hammer right on the white house. =D

A Christian burial is the burial of a deceased person with specifically Christian ecclesiastical rites; typically, in consecrated ground. Until recent times Christians generally objected to cremation, and practised inhumation almost exclusively, but this opposition has weakened, and now vanished among Protestants. Catholics are now able to be cremated also, and this is rapidly becoming more common, but the Eastern Orthodox churches still mostly forbid it.
